Conservation Intern Position Description

The Chippewa Watershed Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit conservation organization based in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan whose mission is to protect and restore Central Michigan’s land, water and wildlife resources to improve the quality of life for all. The Conservancy owns 22 nature preserves which are open to the public for passive recreation and maintains 39 conservation easements on private land to protect conservation values in its five-county service area across Central Michigan. Position Description:

  • Help design, build and maintain non-motorized trail systems
  • Identify and eradicate invasive species on nature preserves using a variety of control methods
  • Develop marketing and outreach materials
  • Assist with the preparation of Pure Michigan/state level water trail designation application
  • Support the Conservancy’s Business Adopt-a-Preserve program
  • Cultivate, train and manage volunteers for preserve stewardship work sessions
  • Install wayfinding, boundary and educational signage on conservation properties
  • Assist with writing small grants and other fundraising endeavors
  • Represent the Conservancy at various outreach events
  • Operate string trimmers, push mowers, leaf blowers and other power tools to maintain preserves
  • Other duties as assigned

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A passion for natural resource protection
  • Availability to work from April/May 2019 to September/October 2019
  • Physical fitness to engage in sometimes challenging outdoor conservation work
  • Reliable vehicle for transportation to and from work sites
  • Recently awarded or working toward a natural resource-related bachelor’s degree

  • Part time or full time unpaid internship
  • College credit is available
  • Reports to Executive Director and Development and Outreach Coordinator
